Your business is not the problem

Every week, someone tells you to fix your offer or fix your funnel.

Nine times out of ten, your business is not the problem. Your state is.

The founders who keep moving are not working harder. They are managing their energy before they manage their work.

There is a simple system for doing that. I call it RISE. By the end of this, you will know how to use it this week.

She started Spanx with a pair of scissors

In 1998, Sara Blakely was 27 years old and selling fax machines door to door. She had $5,000 in savings and no business degree.

She wanted to wear white pants to a party. Nothing she owned worked under them. So she grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the feet off her control-top pantyhose.

That was the first Spanx.

She wrote her own patent to save money. She kept her day job for two more years. In 2021, Blackstone bought the company at a valuation of $1.2 billion.

Her vision stayed big.
The bar for starting got smaller.
That is how resistance dies.

The reels I never made until I dropped the bar

I had the same resistance with reels for years. I wanted the right camera and the right studio. Nothing got made.

Then I dropped the bar.

I shot on my phone.

I edited in three minutes.

My reels started getting more reach than anything I had done before.

The work never changed. My state did. When you lower the bar for starting, your energy opens up and the work gets done.

RISE: The founder state system

Step 1: Reset Rituals

Every 45 minutes, step away from your desk for five minutes.

Walk around the block or stretch your back. Move your body before you move to the next task.

Think of it as insurance. It stops one bad call from poisoning the next hour.

Step 2: Input Curation

What you read becomes what you write. What you watch becomes how you feel.

Unfollow three accounts that drain you today. Add three that feed you instead. Your state is your most valuable asset as a founder, so guard what gets in.

Step 3: Signal Reading

Stuck, bored, anxious, and tired are not problems. They are data.

Stuck means the bar is too high, so lower it. Anxious means you do not have a plan yet, so write one down. Bored means the task should be handed off. Tired means you skipped a reset earlier in the day.

Step 4: Energy Architecture

Not every hour of your day has the same power. Match the work to the hour.

Do your sharpest thinking in the morning when your mind is clear. Save admin for the evening when your energy is low. Stop trying to strategize at 5pm.

Most founders read step one and keep scrolling. The ones who move do step one today.

Do this before you read another newsletter

Pick one 45-minute block on your calendar tomorrow. Put a five-minute walk right after it. Take the walk, no matter what the next task is.
